Craftsman House #24 - Living Room & Cat
Crush, our tortoise-shell cat, watches from the card catalog table at the left of the picture. This photo of the living room shows a good view of the red oak floors that I had milled from the trees that I cut from the homesite.
Gustav Stickley was an advocate of using materials from the site wherever possible in the construction of the home. I imagine that this was somewhat easier to accomplish in 1905, when he published the plans to this home, than it was in 2006 when we built it.
It was difficult to find anyone interested in taking the time required to do this. As a result, I did most of the flooring work myself, from cutting down the trees, cutting them in to logs and stacking the logs. I enlisted the help of a local man with a portable saw mill who cut the logs into rough lumber. I then took the lumber to a local Mennonite farmer who placed them in his kiln to dry for approximately 6 weeks, then to a local millworker who cut and milled them into random width tongue & groove flooring as well as a good deal of the trim & door/window casing used throughout the first floor. Fortunately, the original plans of the home included a page that indicated the dimensions for most of the trim.
Installation and finishing of the floor took me a good solid week of work. I did have a professional do the final sanding of the floor before I finished it with two coats of a penetrating oil finish.
When I was finished, I had the entire first floor done in red oak with just three spare boards remaining!
